Baseball

I have not been great about keeping up with this, which is not surprising.   Whatever.

I’m a big baseball fan.  One of the things I enjoy is rotisserie baseball, which is fantasy baseball – really, the daddy of fantasy sports.   I’ve been in a league since the mid 90’s and have won it three times, including last year.

I went into this season assuming i was rebuilding, but I’m currently 3rd.  Now, it’s just April, but several things have happened that make me think I can contend – several things went well for me at the beginning of the year.  As always, I have work to do, but the team has a lot of stuff going for it.

My auction was good this year, but not perfect.   I failed to get any closers, which means it will be tough to make up ground in saves and it’s hard to win if you end up punting a category.

And my catchers are pretty terrible.  I mean, most catchers are ba, but mine are bad and don’t play much 😉

New Dr Who

Dr Who, for those who haven’t been paying attention, started today.  The new Doctor is a woman!  Jodie Whitaker, who I saw in Broadchurch, which has a lot of ex-Who people in associated with it.

I thought it was a good Who episode.  Not as much manic running around as we got, especially from Smith and Capaldi and there was an actual stunt where the Doctor jumped from one crane to the other, which seemed pretty dangerous until you realize that, earlier in the episode, she fell several miles from space into a train car, and just got up and fought an alien right away.   Timelords are pretty indesctructible during regeneration, I guess.

I’m not sure who Jodie is closest too – maybe Peter Davidson?     I don’t think she’s particularly like Davidson, but she’s pretty intense and more open than the most recent Doctor’s were.   The outfit is closer to the eighties style than anything so far and she was able to build a sonic screwdriver out of spoons pretty fast, I thought, so very competant.    And of course overconfident, bringing along all the companions by accident when she went looking for her TARDIS.

I feel good about the upcoming season.

I then watched the season opener of The Walking Dead, and man, these guys are unable to plan anything, getting a kid killed and a main character almost killed because they didn’t research very well.

After the confirmation

Well, he got confirmed.  This doesn’t surprise me, though it does sadden me.   I think he showed that he is not good under pressure, despite the GOP’s attempt to make him out to have been great by yelling louder than he did.   But, practically, even if he had not been confirmed, the guy that Trump picked next would have, in a lame duck session if necessary.

I don’t see how this is a big victory for the GOP – I mean, it’s significant as hell, but this was a done deal after Trump won and the Senarte was republican.

Baseball

I’m a huge baseball fan.   I love the Red Sox and they just won game #1 of the ALDS against the Yankees (which makes 4 post-season wins in a row against the Yankees, which is one of those weird things you get with post-season baseball, since the last game they played was 14 years ago)

Anyway, I love the Sox and the other thing is fantasy baseball – Rotisserie league baseball, to be a precise.  I’ve been in an NL only league for 25 years now, with some guys I met through strat-o-matic baseball in college.  Well, one guy.  There were others in the league I knew from there at first, but only 1 now.

The Sox are in the playoffs, after having the best season ever for a Sox team, and one of the better seasons ever.  And I managed to win my league, for the first time since 2003.  I mainly get a big-honking trophy for the year starting in April.

The Journey Begins

This is my simple little blog.  My plan is to write random stuff about random topics that come to mind.  I doubt very much that anyone will ever read this – I doubt I’m going to tell anyone about it, in fact.    If you do, you’ll learn some stuff about me, I guess.   I doubt you’ll care all that much 😉

The thing is, there is stuff I want to talk about that doesn’t fit into a facebook post.   I may not even keep this up – I never have managed to write daily ever before, but what the hell.

I’m writing this the night before the Senate does cloture on Kavanaugh.  I have no idea what cloture actually means, other than it’s a procedural thing and, apparently, they can’t actually vote on him until it happens and it takes 30 hours later.

I don’t know what happened to Dr Ford in the early 80’s.  It seems obvious to me that something did and that she believes it was Brett Kavanaugh.  It’s also clear to me that Judge Kavanaugh is hiding something.    It could just be embarrassment from the amount of drinking he did in high school and that this is public knowledge, I don’t know.    I cannot imagine it’s fun admitting the stupid things you did in high school.

The problem is that he’s going to be a massively public figure, satirized on SNL and late night shows for decades.  And, just based on his testimony, I don’t know that I want him on the court.      I think he will be on the court, however.

I worry, as well, that I’m just falling to partisan bias.   Of the people in my FB feed who post, it splits exactly on partisan lines.

btw – I just realized I had a quote and a pic of water in my blog, put there by wordpress.  I have no idea who Izaak Walton is.  I’m going to leave it there, though.

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton
